UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FEDERAL MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT (FMARD) ANNOUNCES ADMISSION INTO THE


2014 FIELD EPIDEMIOLOGY AND LABORATORY TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR THE AWARD OF
A)     MPH in Field Epidemiology Practice
B)      MPH in Veterinary Epidemiology Practice and
C)      MPH in Laboratory Epidemiology Practice
Introduction:
The Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) (www.nigeria-feltp.net) is a two year in service training program in Field Epidemiology Practice, Veterinary Epidemiology Practice or Laboratory Epidemiology Practice. The NFELTP was created to serve as a long –term continuing program within the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD).
It trains field epidemiologist, Public Health Laboratories, and Veterinary Epidemiologist for leadership positions in various levels of both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture. The trainees provide epidemiological services to FMOH, State Ministry of Health (SMOH), FMARD and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SMARD), during the training through long-term field placements. The program is sponsored by FMOH and FMARD with technical support provided by U.S Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Program objectives:
Strengthen capacity to respond to public health emergencies such as outbreaks, epidemics, natural disasters, and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
Strengthen capacity for coordination and priority health intervention programs
Strengthen Public Health and veterinary surveillance systems. Strengthen laboratory capacity and participation in surveillance and field investigation. Strengthen the linkage between public health and veterinary epidemiology.
Conduct research activities on priority public health problems improve communications and networking within the country and throughout the region on public health issues
ELIGIBILLITY:
The NFELTP will focus on training persons who are or will become field epidemiology leaders at federal, state and LGA levels.
A.      Candidates interested in the MPH field Epidemiology Practice course should have at least
·         MBBS/M.B.CH.B, BDS degree with certification from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)
·         Two years working experience in a related government position (with evidence of confirmation)
·         Recommendation from the Head of Department/Ministry
·         Candidates working /willing to work in HIV/AIDS programme will have an added advantage
B.      Candidates interested in the MPH Public Health Laboratory Epidemiology Practice course should have at least a
·         B.SC degree (with a minimum of second class upper division) in Microbiology or related subjects
·         Registration and licensing from National council is an added advantage
·         Have a minimum of two years working experience in a government laboratory (with evidence of confirmation)
·         Recommendation from the serving Ministry/department/parastatal
·         Candidates working /willing to work in HIV/AIDS programme will have added advantage.
C.      Candidates interested in the MPH Veterinary Epidemiology Practice course should have at least a
·         DVM degree with certification from Veterinary Council of Nigeria
·         Two years working experience within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development or other relevant state Ministries/Parastatal (with evidence of confirmation)
·         Recommendation from Ministry or parastatal
ACCEPTABILITY REQUIREMENT;
i.                     All candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University of Ibadan (including required credits in English ‘O’ level exams) as well as the other requirements of the postgraduate school. Candidates may check the University website for further details
ii.                   Individuals accepted to the N-FELTP will be required to sign a contract committing them to remain in government service for a minimum of five years following graduation.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The application procedures and form will be available on the website of the Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan (http://www.pgs.ui.edu.ng) at a fee of #18,000. In addition, a fee of #2,500 will be charged for English Proficiency test. Application procedure will open as from Tuesday 7th October 2014. The deadline for submission of applications is Friday 7th November, 2014.
The completed form along with photocopies of relevant credentials, academic transcript and formal statement of at least 250 words explaining the applicants educational and career objectives and how those objectives correspond with N-FELTP, and authorization/recommendation from the applicant employers should be submitted to the secretary of the Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan.
The PG School requires that all candidates for Masters and Diploma programmes TAKE and Pass the English Proficiency test organized by PG school to be considered for admission.

EXAMINATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS
Selected qualified candidates will be invited for an enrollment examination in November 2014. Successful candidates will be interviewed by the FELTP
Selection Committee for final recommendation
Selection committee for sponsorship:
A formal selection committee will be constituted to select applicants for sponsorship and assure balance equity in recruiting and selection procedures. The selection committee will consist of representatives from the following organizations: Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, African Field Epidemiology Network, University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University –Zaria, and CDC.
Commencement of course: Expected date of commencement will be as announced by the program.
