VACANCY FOR MEDICAL OFFICER, AT MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL UNIT, THE GAMBIA

The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Council’s Largest establishment conducting Laboratory field-based and clinical research in a developing country. The unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development , testing and safe adoption of intervention aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infections disease.

The Clinical Services Department (CSD) MRC Unit Fajara comprises a busy 42 bed ward, outpatient department, Gate (triage) clinic, X-ray department and routine diagnostic laboratories. Approximately 50,000 new patients are seen at the MRC’s clinic facilities each year. Twenty four hours a day care is provided for the patients admitted to the wards while the outpatient service operations Monday to Friday during working hours.

We wish to appoint a Medical Officer and seek applications from candidates with:

·         MB.BS or Equivalent medical qualification

·         A minimum of three (3) years post- graduation experience, with preference given to paediatrics and general medicine

·         Excellent record keeping skills

·         Excellent written and spoken English skills

·         Proven experience of managing staff

·         Basic understanding of medical audits

·         Computer literacy in Windows-Words, Excel and E-mail

·         Ability to deal sensitively with patients

·         Ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team

·         Interest  in clinical research into the disease of the tropics

·         Excellent communication skills

·         Willingness to work flex-time and on the on-call rota.

Although not essential, Primary or Part l FWACP or equivalent will be an advantage.

The appointments are for 2 years.

The salary will be paid in Grade 2 of MRC Unit, the Gambia’s payscale at net monthly salary of 58.228 Gambia Dalasi. This converts to a take home pay of approximately $1,420 per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.

 For displaced staff the package will include; furnished rent free accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees for children and other benefits for displaced staff.
